How to pass the Hawaii knowledge test
- Read the handbook. Every question comes from the official Hawaii manuals; the handbook page links to the agency's own copies.
- Practice test by test. Each numbered test mixes Hawaii law with the national road rules, like the real exam.
- Read every explanation. Especially for answers you got right by guessing.
- Simulate the real exam on the category page when you pass the tests comfortably.
Hawaii written test format
| Test | Questions | Pass mark | Minimum age |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car | 30 | 24 correct (6 mistakes allowed) | 15 years 6 months |
| Motorcycle | 30 | 24 correct (6 mistakes allowed) | 15 years 6 months |
| CDL | 50 | 40 correct (10 mistakes allowed) | 21 years |
Car. Hawaii driver licensing is administered by the four counties under state law. The City and County of Honolulu publishes a 30-item written knowledge test for the Class 3 license with a 60-minute limit. The pass mark shown follows the usual 80 percent standard and is listed as unconfirmed because no county publishes it.
Motorcycle. A Class 2 license requires a special motorcycle written examination plus an off-street skills test, and the motorcycle written test cannot be taken online. No county publishes the item count or pass mark for the motorcycle test, so the numbers shown mirror the Class 3 test and are listed as unconfirmed.
CDL. Hawaii issues a commercial learner's permit from age 18 but requires age 21 for the commercial driver license itself. The item count and pass mark for the general knowledge test are not published by HDOT or the counties, so the values shown follow the federal 80 percent standard and are listed as unconfirmed.
